The Fight Against Suicide: Building Mental Fitness, One Campus at a Time
At The Fight Against Suicide, we believe that wellness should be loud, visible, and rooted in action. Thatβs why we created TFAS Wellness Week β a high-energy, student-led initiative designed to meet college students where they are and equip them with real tools to stay mentally fit and resilient.
what is TFAS wellness week
Wellness Week is more than a campaign β itβs a movement. Spanning five to seven days, each Wellness Week brings together music, fitness, speakers, and community activation to create a culture that prioritizes mental fitness over mental illness.
From kickoff concerts to sunrise workouts, faith-based discussions, to certified suicide prevention training, everything we do is grounded in our Six Pillars of Mental Fitness:
Exercise
Diet
Community
Meditation
Reflection
Spirituality
We believe these are the habits that help young people pivot, regroup, and thrive β especially when life throws its hardest punches.
Why It Matters
College is a critical time. Stress, isolation, and pressure can stack up fast β and too often, students donβt have the tools or support systems to cope. Weβre here to change that.
In 2020, the UGA and Atlanta communities were shocked by the tragic and sudden passing of Sam Asbury. To his friends, Sam had life figured out. He had just started work at a prestigious financial firm, was the life of the party, and an exceptional athlete. What his friends didnβt see was the draining mental battle Sam was fighting. Shortly after graduating college and starting his new job, Sam took his own life.
Samβs story, although heartbreaking, is not unique. Thousands of young men and women struggle silently with their mental health, depression, and suicidal ideation. His story fuels our mission and reminds us why this work matters.
Wellness Week gives students permission to show up as they are, while giving them the structure and support to move forward with strength. Itβs real. Itβs raw. And itβs making an impact.
